Student Profile
Hi my name is Krystal Smith, I am a Nursing student as of 2025, I am very excited to start my new journey into nursing. I am a former childcare educator holding a diploma in early childhood, I was torn between continuing my teaching studies and becoming a nurse and I have come to the conclusion nursing is my passion and my future forever career.
Being able to help the people around me when they are in their most vulnerable state means the world to me, knowing that they trust me. My dream is to work in paediatrics or paediatrics oncology as looking after children will always hold a special place in my heart.
How will I contribute to improving Indigenous health as a qualified medical practitioner or health worker?
I will contribute to the improvement of indigenous health as a qualified healthcare worker by ensuring that everyone gets a say on their health, it has always confused me to how some people get treated so differently just because of the colour of their skin, I want to be one of those nurses where everyone feels safe to come to me for advice or medical help. It is my job to ensure the hospital I work in is a welcoming place for all races and religions regardless of their beliefs and values.
I will continue to ensure those who are struggling receive the extra support they need to overcome anything they are going through. Being an Indigenous person, as well as receiving medical attention can be hard due to a lot of bias behaviour from the older generation and even the younger generation. Believing that Indigenous people don’t deserve the same medical support as an non-Indigenous person although I believe everyone deserves the same amount of help/support and respect, we are all human beings trying to get through each day.
