Student Profile
My name is Ky Burgoyne, and I am 18 years old. My Aboriginal tribes are Kokatha from SA and Warrai from the NT. I feel very connected to my family and community as my Aboriginal cultures are an essential part of who I am, and I feel deeply connected to my heritage as a result. The traditions and stories passed down through generations help guide me in everything I do. I am passionate about learning more about my culture and sharing it with others. I am a very active and academic student completing all my schoolwork at a high standard whilst balancing my sporting commitments.
Some of my academic achievements include achieving a raw ATAR of 86.35 and an adjusted ATAR of 91.05. Furthermore, I have served many school leadership positions including being a Year 12 school captain this past year. As I am very involved in my football clubs, I have helped with water running, training camps and boundary and field umpiring. Through these activities, I have gained valuable skills and a strong connection to my football community. This semester I will begin my journey at the University of South Australia, undertaking a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science degree. This interests me as I want to be involved in the medical and public health field to help patients recover from any medical condition.
How will I contribute to improving Indigenous health as a qualified medical practitioner or health worker?
Once I successfully complete my degree, I intend on using my new qualifications to benefit the Aboriginal community. With my degree, I can help by educating the Indigenous community about my practice such as early detection of diseases like cancer and how to get checked and get a healthy outcome. I will also intend to contribute to research Aboriginal health issues to help develop better treatments. Lastly, I can encourage young aspiring Aboriginal students to work in the medical field and promote hard work to get a successful job and be financially safe.
